Why Do I Keep Talking About High School?
High School was a turning point in many people’s lives.
Puberty - Insanity - Depression - Elation - Dumb mistakes. Really, network television dramas have nothing on the inner life of an average high school student. Every slight from others magnified a thousand times. Every success like a burning star in the blackest night. High school was when we were all raw, and emotions were pure…and more painful…than any other time.
It doesn’t matter if you were the jock or the nerd, the cheerleader or the stoner, high school is one of the most memorable periods of time in all our lives.
What we learned and who we became during that four year period has a huge impact on who we become as adults. If you don’t look back and pay attention and analyze what the hell you were thinking back then, many of the quirks you picked up when it comes to dealing with others will haunt you.
From becoming so accustomed to people wanting to hear your football stories that you don’t notice when people yawn in your face, to thinking no one wants to waste time talking to you when you are seen by your colleagues as a person others want to be around, that baggage can hurt you.
It is not the inner child we have to nurture and come to terms with, because when things happen to you as a child you know you did not have control over them. It is the mistakes and the “should have” and the “would have” that haunt us from when we were in high school.
- Why didn’t I work harder?
- Why did I think college was a joke?
- Why did I wear my hair like that?
- Why did I go to the dance with that person?
It all comes down to that awful, horrible, too-common phrase
If only I knew then what I know now!
To stop being who you were in high school means letting go and accepting you are who you are right now…you know what you know…and it’s good enough.
- You have a story others want to hear.
- You have a business that other companies want to hire.
- You have skills that can get you a better job.
Realizing how wonderful you really are will allow you to go into new business relationships with the confidence that people notice. You can be more successful, and you can do it by being yourself.
