What Will You Do With Your Hands?

by Jennifer Gniadecki on May 27th, 2008

clasped-hands-nc A common problem for networkers is what on earth to do with your hands when you’re talking to someone. You don’t want to twiddle your fingers and look anxious or nervous, you’re trying to exude confidence. You’re trying not to eat, because you don’t want to slather the front of your shirt or dress with dip, and fiddling with your business card would just be distracting.

You thought about putting your hands in your pockets, but you’re not thinking that’s going to be a good plan, either, because then if you fidget in your pockets, well, people might think things. *laugh*

If there is a snack tray, look for something inoffensive like cheese. Or, if there are beverages, you can hold a drink - just make sure your nerves don’t encourage you to slam down those drinks like they were water. Even if they are water - you don’t want to spend half the networking event in the restroom!

Plan ahead for what feels comfortable. Check yourself out in a full length mirror and make sure you choose a flattering option rather than one that makes you look nervous or out of place.

What do you do with your hands at a networking event or convention?
