Speaking Engagements - Plan to Stay
After you’ve spoken to a group, there are going to be people that didn’t want to ask a question in front of the rest of the group. They’re shy, and if you want to be a hit and invited back for more speaking goodness…you need to be accommodating!
If the event is supposed to end at 7pm, don’t plan to be somewhere by 7:30pm or you’ll be running for the hills the minute you’re done. If you do this, many people will think you didn’t like them as an audience or you don’t really care if they learn or not. It leaves a bad impression, and does not make you seem more important or in demand (even if you are.)
Instead of putting in your calendar the event ends at 7pm, put 8pm. You may not need the whole hour, but I’ve had engagements that went over by an hour and a half before. It happens when people are engaged and having fun and you don’t want to cut it off.
Don’t stay all day and give free consulting advice, but give people a chance to have one on one time with you. You’re the expert - set yourself apart by being the accessible expert!
