Networking With People Who Are Different

by Jennifer Gniadecki on May 21st, 2008

No matter what you look like, you will inevitably find yourself in a situation where you’re the only one that looks like you. Sometimes this can be a scary feeling. It tends to be human nature to stick around people we’re familiar with and whether the difference is race or sex or even weight - feeling like you’re the only one can make you nervous.

Find Similarities

You and I both know that under the surface people are people, and finding what makes you similar with others can be a great way to start. If you’re at a networking event, chances are you all have at least that group in common (even if it’s your first time there) so talk about that. Once you have a few conversations under your belt you’ll feel much more secure.

Don’t Judge

I know it’s difficult, and I know it’s human nature, but don’t judge the people at the networking event who are different from you. Ylonda Glover was quoted today in the MIlwaukee Journal Sentinel:

“I used to drive out every Tuesday from Milwaukee to Pewaukee to network with a group of predominantly white women and men,” said Glover, who is African-American. “They were some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met. They taught me how to network.”

If she had walked in, seen a predominantly white crowd, and walked back out based on pre-conceived notions - she wouldn’t be in such a great position today with her business.

Her efforts are paying off as her company has gone from zero profitability in its first few years to annual sales of $50,000 to $60,000.

Relax

Too often people get nervous and let it show above and beyond all else. Don’t let your first impression of a competent, intelligent business owner be marred by nerves. Go in and have some fun. Meet some people. Enjoy yourself. Everyone loves to spend time with people that make them smile. You just can’t do that if you’re nervous.
