Naked Networking (take it *all* off!)
When you get ready for a networking event, what do you normally wear?
A suit, tie, and your fake “I’m so successful let’s create some scarcity” demeanor? I can tell you that one of those three isn’t going to do anything for your business, your life, or your connections. When someone puffs themselves up to seem bigger and better than they really are, most people can tell. I mean, the reason almost everyone is afraid of selling is because of the horrible images salesmen (or women) create in our minds. We picture the used car dealer selling the horrible broken-down car to the innocent person - we picture the vacuum guy that came to our door when we were kids and just wouldn’t leave.
We’ve all experienced how they swore that quantities were limited, we’d never get this chance again, or a million other excuses why there was no better time to buy.
Now, when you mix that attitude with the way people are trying to save because no one has enough money, you see why sales is so resented.
So do your part, and don’t put on airs or pretend to be amazingly successful. People want to get to know you and be able to make a real decision about your services. Not put up with another sales pitch about how you might not have availability in another ten minutes or you might be sold out of the product.
Be kind. Be yourself. Be naked. You’ll find you make a lot more connections showing who you really are instead of trying to show off a fake Rolex with an even more fake attitude.
