Ask Questions To Keep The Conversation Going
The best way to keep a conversation is to ask a question.
One that shows you not only care, but were paying attention to what the other person was saying. If you are trying to make a connection, if the other person looks unsure of what to say, a question can keep things going and upbeat.
Of course, if they keep answering with one word answers, it’s possible they’re dying to get out of the conversation. Please…let them go. You will have another chance to talk to them on another day. It might not be you, it might not be what you’re saying, it might be the other person didn’t get enough sleep or is hungry. Don’t make assumptions.
Before you go out to a networking event, try writing down a few generic questions that will open the other person up. Not what do you do for a living that’s too general and boring. Try questions like:
- Who is the most interesting person you’ve talked to so far?
- Is there someone here you came to meet?
- How often do you network in a month?
- Have you been networking long?
- Does your company see a lot of success from networking?
Even if you have nothing else in common, you’re at the same event, so you have that. You can use it to feel out if the person you’re talking to is someone you want to talk to again.
