When you go out there and meet people, you will find that talking about your business becomes second nature. You’ll know how to explain what you do, how your business runs, and how to assess what you can say that will sell you as a potential business colleague to your fellow business owners.

But there are dangers to becoming the belle of the ball. Make sure you keep these tidbits in mind when you go out  there to keep yourself from getting lost in the crowd.

Keep your boundaries simple and clear
I cannot stress this whole “boundary thing” enough. Know what you are comfortable talking about, know what you feel is no one else’s business. Know these things before you talk to someone else about your business. Before it becomes too late to take something back instead of stopping a conversation and taking it down a different path.

Know who you’re spending time with
Just because someone seems nice, it doesn’t mean they are. Try to get to know the people you’re spending your time with. You can have people you hang out with just because they’re fun, but balance that with people you can learn from. If people start to become negative, or constantly complain about other people…be wary.

Don’t get bogged down
Are you seeing the same group of people all the time? Do you only talk to people on one bulletin board online? Sure a comfort zone is nice, but there is only so much business one group can push on one another. Eventually it ends, and if you don’t hedge your bets, you could be out of luck down the line.

Stay strong
If people question your decisions that’s okay! Everyone isn’t going to agree with everything you do. Find a tactful way to explain to people your plans and how you network. It’s your life, and your business, and you always get the final vote on what you do with your time.
