Cuddle Parties – Get Your Networking Elsewhere

by Jennifer Gniadecki on April 28th, 2008

cuddle-up.jpgI was watching the local Chicago NBC affiliate news and they did a story on Cuddle Parties.

Seriously, I could not stop laughing. Neither could the anchors at the newsdesk.

So, you’re anxiety riddled and you decide the way to work through this is to go to a party with someone you know and a room of complete strangers (or if you have no friends just a bunch of strangers) and cuddle.

The evening starts by going over the rules like:

  • Get permission to touch others
  • No sexual touching

Then they show everyone having this total clothes-on no-sex orgy on the floor. I was amazed watching grown people holding stuffed animals, wearing pajamas and spooning in a row of four people.

I could not stop cringing.

These are the people who are afraid to network, and afraid to share with others. So they go and just pet and fawn over other people? How on earth is that going to be helpful? Sure you get your hug fix (I’m not a big fan of hugging strangers, but whatever trips your trigger) but what then? No follow up…you may or may not get a new friend out of the event. What are you getting for the money you spend to participate?

Also, is paying for affection that much different than paying for sex?

I’m sure the people at the party would say it is completely different, but I don’t know. Wouldn’t you rather make connections with people that have something in common with you and start with a cup of coffee at the local coffee shop?

Last but not least I was looking to find the video of my local anchors chortling over the cuddle party (and making orgy jokes too, it was pretty classic) and found a forum post from 2005 advertising a press-friendly half price cuddle party. That wasn’t a big deal, it made sense…until I read this:

As a heads-up, please note that discounted events tend to fill up rather quickly, particularly for men.

Um….that sounds so weird to me. Men are big on bargain shopping for cuddles? Who knew. I mean, I only charge $20 a hug - plus I’ll give you my business card. Should I call that a two for one sale? Just kidding!

I’d love to hear your opinion on cuddle parties.
