Acts of Kindness and Networking

by Jennifer Gniadecki on September 4th, 2008

One of the things most people do when they do their everyday errands is put their head down and try to get it done as quickly as possible. Doing this can leave countless networking opportunities left unnoticed.

Simple acts of kindness can go a long way in establishing yourself as a trusted member of your community. Start by paying more attention to simple etiquette. Please, Thank you, and excuse me really go a lot farther than most people think. Be patient and courteous to the people you are around and the next time they see you at a networking event or local festival they will remember the way you treated them and they will be more likely to want to talk with you. Nobody wants to talk to someone at a networking event when they saw them two days ago being rude in the grocery store.

Helping your neighbors and the elderly in your community can also be a great way to help your image when networking. Doing little things like mowing your neighbors part of the easement or feeding their pet while they go on vacation can mean a lot. Check on your elderly neighbors when the weather is bad, you never know who their children or grand-children are.

Mostly, all this politeness just makes you better at networking events. Start to develop polite habits and you will find your kindness will shine through at networking events and prospects will be lining up to be clients and will have no problem referring you to others.
